Day 131: Parapet Brook to Pinkham Notch

July 23, 2013

Today’s mileage: 4.1
Total mileage: 1866.5

We woke up to a steady rain this morning that kept up for most of the day. We slept in a little this morning because we had such a short day of hiking, and not to mention that we had a big day yesterday. It’s hard to believe that “sleeping in” for me has become 7:15. I never thought I’d see the day.

We packed up as much as we could while we were still in our tent and then proceeded to get soaking wet only minutes after being out in the rain. After months of use, waterproof gear like our pack covers and rain coats don’t repel water as well anymore. Even after only a few miles in the rain, we were soaked and so were our packs. But, no matter. We knew we would be inside a dry hotel room later that day. So, instead of groaning at the amount of water the I dumped out of the bottom of my pack cover, I laughed instead. It’ll dry our eventually!

Miles’ parents planned to meet us at Pinkham Notch, so his mom hiked in about 1.5 miles to meet us and then we all headed back to the Joe Dodge Lodge and visitor center to change clothes before heading into Gorham. We met up with Cleveland, Push-up, Rabbit, Wiki, and Kit Kat, who were all hanging out there when we arrived. We’re all regrouping after the grueling Presidentials and preparing for Maine.

We headed into town for pizza and then checked into the hotel. Laundry is done, gear is drying out, and we’re preparing for a big slackpacking day tomorrow over Wildcat, with the help of Miles’ parents. We were only going to stay here one night, but when they asked us if we wanted to stay another night, we couldn’t deny that. Two nights in a bed? Yes please.

I shaved for the last time of our hike. Anyone who has been following from the beginning may remember my no-shave policy that went down the drain after 7 weeks. It may not seem like a big deal, but I’ve decided that I won’t touch another razor until we reach the end of our thru-hike. The superstitions are kicking in. I suppose you could say that I’m bookending my hike with hairy legs and pits.
